Would you like to visit a German school as part of our High School Stay programme?
ASTUR has been placing students from all over the world in German schools for many years. Our centers can be found across the whole of Germany. Along with our regional coordinators we seek out suitable Host families as well as your place in a German school.
You can come to Germany for three months (Academic Trimester), half a year (Academic Semester) or for a whole school year (Academic year).
Requirements for a school visit to Germany
In order to make the most of school lessons right from the start, we recommend that you have a German Language level of B1. To optimally prepare yourself for your stay you can book a One-to-One course (individual lessons) beforehand. This would also give you the opportunity to get to know another part of Germany.
Start of the High School programme and application procedure
The possible start dates of your High-School-Stay are dictated by both your desired duration and the school calendar of the specific German state (Bundesland) that you will be visiting. It is, therefore, important to know that the school framework in Germany varies by State. This is also applicable to the dates and duration of school holidays.
Academic Year: If you desire to spend a whole school year in Germany, the programme will run from the end of one year’s summer holidays to the beginning of the summer holidays of the following year (a total time period of 42 to 48 weeks).
Academic Semester: If you desire to spend half a year in Germany then it is recommended to start the programme directly at the beginning of the school year; after the summer holidays or at the half way point (around the end of January). Half a year in Germany relates to a time period of 20 to 24 weeks.
Academic Trimester: An Academic Trimester lasts around 3 months (12 weeks) and can be done relatively flexibly even between holiday periods. It is, therefore, important to be aware of the specific state holiday periods when choosing the time of your stay.
An overview of the state-specific dates for the academic year 2017/2018 can be downloaded from: High School Dates 2017/2018.
An overview of dates for the academic year 2018/2019 can be found at: High School Dates 2018/2019.
Generally you should be registered with us at least 3 to 4 months before the desired start of your programme. We need this time in order to find you a suitable host family and get you registered with a suitable school. You will also need this time to prepare! From sorting out a visa and other possible certificates, you will probably have a lot to do.
If you come from a country within the EU then you do not need a visa.
If you need a visa, we will supply you with all the necessary documentation (invitation letter from the host family, confirmation of the German school etc.) in order that you can apply for the visa at the German embassy in your country.
Abitur (entitled to attend a German University)
Would you like to not only complete a school year in Germany but also the Abitur? You must have spent at least the 2 schoolyears prior at a school in Germany, as the Abitur examines your whole time at high school i.e. the last two or three years. Note: Germany schools can last for different lengths of time. In some German States (Bundesländern) High School can last for a total of 8 years (G8), in other States High School can last 9 years (G9). According to these circumstances foreign students have to stay for 2 or 3 years to reach the Abitur.
You can now see that the German High School stay has lots of different aspects and a multitude of conditions. Please be reassured that this is the same for all of our students and that by overcoming these hurdles you should already feel a great sense of achievement and look forward to your experience in Germany with great anticipation.
In any case it is important to make contact with us and ask any questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to send us an email or give us a ring. Aline will gladly help you and answer any queries.

If you are unsure whether you would like to go to school in Germany for a longer period of time, you can try out a German school on trial for a short period of time (up to 4 weeks) as part of the School-Homesaty-Programme. In principle the same framework will apply to you as in the High-School-Stay. Not only is the stay itself shorter but the school requirements are also not as high and the Visa application is somewhat easier.
A language level of A2 is sufficient for this programme. You also have the possibility to book an additional one or two week One-to-One course before a four week School Homestay.
